I
wrote TAILSPIN" after attending the 1998 WARBIRDS
OVER WANAKA AIRSHOW in the magnificent high
country of New Zealand's South Island.
I have dedicated the composition to all aerobatic
pilots who do such
a marvellous job entertaining the public at airshows
everywhere.
Their staggering displays of three dimensional freedom
with twists and turns and tumbles brought to my mind
the bebop revolution of the 1940's and 50's when jazz
broke away from the rigid structures of the Swing
Era.
TAILSPIN was born!
Solos
are in Trumpet 2 and Tenor 1,
(includes written solos for these instruments) Also
includes well notated written section parts for younger
players.
Honeybelle
is a tune that I wrote a good many years ago when
I was listening to and learning some of Duke Ellington's
great compositions, particularly In A Mellow Tone.
Over the years I have played the tune enough so that
I had a very good idea of what I wanted in a big band
chart, namely something reminiscent of the style of
the great Count Basie Orchestra - medium swing, big
dynamic changes, rhythm section with a Freddie Green
style guitar, and a big soli section. So, here is
an Ellington-style tune in a Basie-style chart.
The
chart is written for five trumpets, five bones, five
saxes, and four rhythm. Solos include sixteen measures
for Bone 1 and sixteen measures for Trpt 2. The tempo
is quarter note at 120. At that tempo playing time
should be just under four minutes. Make the most of
the changes in dynamics and the hard swinging medium
tempo.
I'm
Bad About 'Dat is a medium tempo groove chart written for five saxes,
five trumpets, five bones and four rhythm and features the 1st tenor
player. The form is AABA. A sixteen bar soli section over the first
two A's of the form follows the 1st tenor solo. The first eight
bars splits the horns down the middle from front to back instead
of by sections. The last eight of the solo groups the horn sections
conventionally. 1st trumpet solos over the following B section and
the groove changes to a medium mambo. Piano solos over the last
A and the feel returns to the original groove.
With
the D.S. the chart is ninety-four measures long and, at quarter
note = 90, the playing time is around four minutes eleven seconds.
Reflections Composed
by Paul Young
Arranged by Jeremy
Levy
Reflections
- Trombone Feature - Ballad - q=84
Written for 5 Saxes (No doubles), 4 Trombones (1st Tbn - Solo),
4 Trumpets (Flugel doubles), 4 Rhythm
This trombone feature is an arrangement of L.A. trombonist, Paul
Young's beautiful melody. It exploits the trombone's beautiful mid
to upper register, ala Bill Watrous. The bridge section can optionally
be taken down 8vb. Lead trumpet extends to a written high E. Solo
section can be played by piano, tenor, or trombone.
SUNY
Triangle is the big band version of the chart of the same name that
was commissioned by Rick Holland for small band. The chart is set
in an easy latin feel over the changes to the wonderful tune Triste.
Features
tenor solos and piano as well as a 3 part fugal section meant to
challenge the horn players. This is a fun one to play and rehearse.
The recording to the right is the small band version. You
can purchase the chart for small band here.
This
is a 16 bar blues, medium swing. It is pretty straight ahead and
fun to play. Includes a 32 bar saxophone soli. Solos can be open
and are straight blues first, then when backgrounds come in the
form of the tune takes over.

Blues for Pembroke Composed
and Arranged
by Jeremy Levy
Blues
For Pembroke - Medium Swing, q=150
Written for: 5 Saxes (No doubles), 4 Trumpets (Flugel doubles),
4 Trombones, and 4 Rhythm
This
minor blues with a 12/8 bridge is an exciting medium swing chart.
The saxophones are featured in a 24 bar sax soli, and there are
solos in Tenor 1 and Tpt 2. This chart really sits in the pocket
and grooves. Lead trumpet has quite a few written E's and an optional
F#. Great for an advanced high school band with a good trumpet section,
and excellent for a college or rehearsal band.
This
brand new chart has Kind of a Mintzer/Yellowjackets
vibe to it. It features piano and Flugel. Lead trumpet
has a few written Eb's and an E at the end.
