The definitive text used for the time-honored Chord Scales course at Berklee College of Music, this book concentrates on scoring for every possible ensemble combination and teaches performers and arrangers how to add color, character and sophistication to chord voicings. Topics covered include: selecting appropriate harmonic tensions, understanding jazz harmony, overcoming harmonic ambiguity, experimenting with unusual combinations and non-traditional alignments, and many more. The accompanying CD includes performance examples of several different arranging techniques.
"A no-nonsense, meat and potatoes source of basic and not-so-basic information about everything relating to jazz writing - covers several courses worth of information." - Kenny Werner Pianist, Composer and Author of Effortless Mastery

The material presented is great, and will prove helpful in my study of arranging.
I did have one problem with the book however. In the introduction it states, "Because this book is intended for an expanded audience beyond students enrolled at Berklee, it includes substantial amounts of new text, many new musical examples, solutions to exercises and an accompanying CD."
Yes, it's all there except the solutions to the exercises and I am finding that frustrating. I contacted the publisher and got this reply:
Our Senior Editor clarified that the author meant the exercises begin with a measure of answers filled in for the student. They will clarify the "solutions to exercises" mention in the next printing of the book. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused you.
Anyways, I found this aspect frustrating and a hinderance to my getting the full benefit of this book.
Customer Review: A must for anyone interested in arranging.
This book is absolutely excellent. Like other Berklee Press books, it is easy-to-understand, and it offers exercises after each exercise to ensure that the lessons are etched in your brain through hands-on application. This book demystifies alot concerning voicings and chord scale theory, and I dare say that this and "Reharmonization Techniques" by Randy Felts should be the first books one reads before they read other fine arranging books by Sebesky, Riddle, Mancini and Grove. Many of those books focus more on style, with little if any explaination of jazz/chord theory. Once you get the essentials from this book, you'll gain way more from the other books.
This book starts with a lesson on chord theory, then simple 4 and 5 part voicings, as well as non-chord tone reharmonization. It then proceeds to tell you exactly how to write voicings in fourths, clusters, and upper-structure triads. In addition, it comes with a CD with recorded examples from each chapter of the book, so you can hear the subtle differences between the various voicings and effects.
This book is amazing!
One word of advice (speaking from my own initial misunderstanding): when reading the early chapter detailing "avoid notes", be sure to absorb and understand it as much as possible - it is the foundation upon which the later chapters on specialized voicings are built upon. This is the only part of the book where a decent grasp of jazz chord construction and tensions MAY be needed. In a nutshell, a note is avoided because: a.) It creates an nasty, dissonant interval with an essential chord tone, or b.) It creates an inteval with an essential chord tone that is uncharacteristic of that chord type (ie. a tritone in a Major 7th chord, etc.)

This is the first time I found how to learn about jazz arranging and how to improve my last music knowledge.
It is a wonderful book.
Customer Review: Great book with great recording examples
Arranging Jazz for Large Ensemble gives the readers the necessary skills to write for big bands. Although it is an advance subject in the Arranging area, the book starts with writing for unison and octaves. There are also great chapters about background writing with riff and guide tone lines. The Shout Chorus chapter provides beginners writers to fully understand the arrangement "big picture". All levels of arrangers can benefit from these chapters and their musical examples. They will help you memorize sound texture and effects as well as the writing techniques. As you go over the other chapters, you can easily assimilate their content and apply them successfully. It's unique and well written book, one of the best of its kind.

The book is great! Although Jazz doesn't follow rules ,Baker has written some wonderful thumb rules that ,in my opinion , will simplify writing & practising Jazz. the book is a step-by step book . first , you get to know the instruments charactaristics, their scoring ..etc .second, the melody line.third, the accompany chord.fourth , the piano trio..etc I am carefully studying the book , page by page. Every lesson needs a sufficient time to practise (through writing & playing). Until now , it has strengthened my sense of composing and made it more articulate. it might take you some time to get used to it.. but hey it's great if you adore JAZZ!
Customer Review: better know your musical terms and music in general
This is the hardest book I have ever read on music. It is an intence study and wordy in places that will boggle the home-grown musician. It reccomends other study materials in every chapter which I dont know where anyone could find the time to practice thier instrument. It should come with CD's with playing examples. But in all the book has a wealth of useful information, and if you're willing to go to Juliard and you're sreious then the book is for you.
List Price: $39.95 Used Price: $10.00 Customer Review: Hard to find, but really worth it!
I studied 2 years with Bill at Eastman in the 70's, and he talked a lot about Ellington's linear approach, how after you transcribed his big band arrangements, you found a lot of seemingly non-sensical vertical sonorities. This book is the fruit of his exhaustive endeavors, and offers a fresh, lucid approach to the understanding of 3-5 part harmonies functioning contrapuntally, as independent linear melody, not flying chord progressions at eighth-note speeds. This book will show you alternatives, and fresh approaches to your harmonic arranging vocabulary.
Customer Review: The Best
This is by far the best text available on writing and arranging for horns and ensemble.

I studied with Howard Morgen 30+ years ago. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had (and I've had plenty). I recommend any book by him.
Customer Review: Great insight
Having been a subscriber to Fingerstyle guitar player magazine (for 5 years), Howard's articles were the most clear and complete. This book is a continuation of that style. If you want to learn about intervals, chord substitution and jazz reharmonization techniques. This is it.
Whether you are an arranger or a composer or a music major, JAZZ COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING will help you gain a full understanding of the subject. This comprehensive introduction to the skills and techniques necessary for producing a successful composition and arranging project focuses on the concepts underlying instrumental writing, rather than on stylistic concerns. Narrative and music examples illustrate the harmonic and melodic practices prevalent in today's contemporary jazz music scene. The text focuses on presenting voice-leading tendencies in a number of different contexts: line writing, bass line construction, voicing procedures, and scoring textures.

Working on the premise that students learn by doing, Sabina takes students step-by-step through the basics of arranging for the big band. Over 200 music examples support the theory presented in this text, and over 60 of the most valuable examples also appear on a dynamic, interactive CD-ROM that is shrink-wrapped with every new copy of the book. Music examples appear in two formats with synthesizer sound: locked Finale files (for analysis) and unlocked Standard MIDI Format files that allow students to experiment with sound and technique as they change the musical examples. Using the MIDI files, students can manipulate, print, and save their arrangements. The text and CD-ROM also include three complete arrangements that span from swing to jazz-rock. Back matter includes a comprehensive glossary, bibliography, and discography.

This book evolved from 40 years of teaching composition and arranging plus 50 years of professional writing. A comprehensive study, it covers preparatory activities, philosophical perspectives, listening lists, choice tune lists, all elements of composing melodies and chord progressions, arranging for small and large ensembles, enhanced use of rhythm sections, a sensitive approach to instrumental ranges, textural options, form, and the producing of lead sheets, scores, conductors guides, and part-copying. Though a self-contained study, the book has the unique feature of leading the reader to other excellent books on the subject.

Jazz Arranging by Norman David is a superb little book, I'm amazed it doesn't appear in arranging book lists more often. I recently read 'Modern Jazz Voicings' by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig, and 'Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble' by Ken Pullig and Dick Lowell, and as fabulous as those two books are, I'd say this book belongs up there at the top with them.
The exercises give you immediate hands-on experience with scoring and transposition for various instruments, and it explains the various concepts and techniques in a clear and logical fashion. It starts with your usual description of each instrument, ranges, etc. Then, it covers writing for the rhythm section, two-part writing, 3/4/5-part writing, special voicings (fourths, USTs, clusters and spreads), and expanded methods (such as line-writing). It ends with two chapters on large ensemble writing and big-band writing. The exercises closing each chapter are very rewarding, and if you're feeling diligent, you can breeze through this book in no time.
Of course, a prior knowledge of jazz harmony is recommended, which can easily be obtained from excellent books such as 'The Jazz Language' by Dan Haerle, 'Jazz Theory and Practice' by Lawn/Hellmer, or 'The Jazz Theory Book' by Mark Levine. If you know the basics, however, you should make this one of the first arranging books you purchase!
Customer Review: The "Single Greatest Text on Arrangment Available Anywhere"!
Dr. Norman David has created a work of pure intellectual genius. This text on Jazz arrangement will serve as the high-water mark with which all future discussions on the subject will be judged. Professor David has an extensive resume of musical accomplishment that would make even the most highly regarded player cringe with envy. It is this experiential knowledge that shines through in this comprehensive guide. There is no other work as complete and well organized, with the intent to impart practical knowledge for the professional, as is this book by Dr. Norman David. I not only recommend this book on arranging, but consider it dogmatic for those that seek to become true professional musicians.
