Paul Gibens

Paul has been a professional musician/arranger for 45 years.

He was born in New Zealand and studied architecture at the Auckland University.
After graduating he worked for 5 years in the Fiji Islands.

However the music bug bit hard and in his spare time Paul taught himself alto sax, clarinet & flute also worked on the Berklee Correspondence Course in arranging - all while relaxing under a coconut palm!

On returning to Auckland, NZ in 1965 he started a hectic lifestyle of architect by day and musician/arranger by night.
For the next 20 years Paul was a principal arranger for TVNZ light entertainment shows using all types of bands from pop-rock through symphonic orchestras.
At the same he was regularly commissioned by Radio NZ to compose and arrange jazz programs for combos, big bands and light orchestras.

Since arriving in Brisbane, Australia in 1988 Paul has kept very busy with arranging commissions for television, Queensland Philharmonic, Tom Burlinson’s Sinatra tribute show, Carols At The Cove (Sanctuary Cove Christmas shows) and many more.
Many of his charts are used by the great Australian music icon conductor/pianist Maestro Tommy Tycho.

Paul has written an extensive library of big band vocal charts which are much in demand throughout Australia. Paul also leads his own 10 piece jazz band Decahedron.

Big Band and 10 Piece Charts by Paul Gibens

Moreton Bay Bug
Paul Gibens
(scored for 10 piece band)

Alto sax solo feature in pop-rock double time feel. Scored for 10 piece small big band. Flute, alto sax, 3 trumpets, 2 tenor trombones, keyboard, bass & drums.

Alto sax player…you’re seated in front of a big enticing seafood platter topped with Moreton Bay Bugs (a small lobster found around the northern shoreline of Australia).
Start to play by savoring that delicious aroma and after the key change get stuck into it !
Keyboard use string sound with ensemble and preferably electric piano sound for your solo.

Sorry bass player but you’ve gotta play the written notes…..its all part of the big scheme.
Click on play button to listen…..recorded version has fade ending but now scored with a written finish.

Tailspin
Paul Gibens

I wrote TAILSPIN" after attending the 1998 WARBIRDS OVER WANAKA AIRSHOW in the magnificent high
country of New Zealand's South Island.
I have dedicated the composition to all aerobatic pilots who do such
a marvellous job entertaining the public at airshows everywhere.

Their staggering displays of three dimensional freedom with twists and turns and tumbles brought to my mind
the bebop revolution of the 1940's and 50's when jazz broke away from the rigid structures of the Swing Era.
TAILSPIN was born
!

Solos are in Trumpet 2 and Tenor 1,
(includes written solos for these instruments) Also includes well notated written section parts for younger players.

Warrigal Road
Paul Gibens
(scored for 10 piece band)

Written for my Decahedron band this chart features a cute little minor key melody line played by flute and harmon muted trumpet in octave unison.
Scored for alto sax (doubling flute), tenor sax, 3 trumpets, 2 tenor trombones, piano, bass & drums.
(I've included an alternative alto part for those who don't play flute)
The piece should be played with a nice Basie feel and the pianist gets a chance to court the Count with a 32 bar solo chorus.

Short solos are also included for alto and tenor saxes. After the third chorus the chart modulates to Eb minor for unison horns to play a swinging line over stop time rhythm.
Something to keep the horns on their toes! Then back to original key and the A section melody and out
