Product Description:

Brian Setzer's Dig That Crazy Christmas is proof that behind every rockabilly hepcat is a big band leader. Mixing originals with seasonal faves, Setzer and his orchestra manage to swing, rock, roll and otherwise nail such gems as "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus," "Zat You Santa Claus" (popularized by Louis Armstrong at Christmas long past) and "Cool Yule." He even tackles an instrumental arrangement of "My Favorite Things" that allows him to show off his guitar chops to great effect. Even the unexpected "Angels We Have Heard on High"--played at a galloping tempo, with an angelic chorus and loads of shiny brass--fits into Setzer's big bad sack. His original tunes (and seasonal rewrite of "in the Mood" called "Getting' in the Mood for Christmas") such as "Santa Arrives in A Hot Rod" and "Hey Santa' will be right at home, or in the cocktail lounge, or that New Year's Eve Party that you will have trouble remembering. Recommended fun. --Martin Keller

Reviews for Dig That Crazy Christmas

A hot, swinging Christmas CD!
This was a great CD. I recommend it for every Brian Setzer fan. His "Zat You Santa Claus?", "Jingle Bell Rock" & "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus" are classic. Get this CD & settle in for a rocking, swinging, cool Yule!
Another great Christmas CD
This is Brian Setzers second Christmas album.
This CD in my mind is not quite as good but has songs that really catch my attention.
We re-writes the Glen Miller classic In The Mood with Christmas words to come up with a very lively Christmas song.
I have to admit it gets me tapping my toes. Then again Glen Miller did that too.
Jingle Bell Rock is another classic that he tears to pieces. This is the hottest version on the planet with lightning fast guitar licks, just they way you expect to hear them from Brian.
Let it Snow is another great rocker that he ups the tempo on.
Mr Grinch is another song he has a lot of fun with.
Brian Setzer has really come up with 2 very good Christmas albums and I would recommend them both to you.
Both of his Christmas CD`s will have you rockin time and time again. Merry Christmas

Dig That Crazy Setzer
Setzer does it again. There are a "baker`s dozen" cuts for you hep cats and chicks just in time for the holidays. Personal favs include: "Gettin` In The Mood (For Christmas)" which is a reworking of the classic Glenn Miller "In the Mood", and a Setzerized version of the Louis Armstrong `52 classic "`Zat You Santa Claus?". (And listen for a "Stray Cat Strut" solo in that one.) For those in a mellow mood try "What Are You Doing New Year`s Eve". All in all, some choice Christmas cuts.
Good effort, but...
Mr. Setzer`s new Christmas album, sadly, is not as exceptional as his earlier "Boogie Woogie Christmas". Still, it is certainly better than many of the holiday albums that are turned out, especially if you like the Brian Setzer Orchestra`s swinging/rocking big band sound. "Angels We Have Heard On High" was, perhaps, a poor choice for demonstrating this band`s style, but they do a good job with several of the other tracks. However I, for one, will be sticking with "Boogie Woogie Christmas" as it still is one of my favorite holiday collections.
What Happened?
I don`t know about the other reviewers on here, but the sequel to Boogie Woogie Christmas is not Setzer`s best. With over-the-top energy that seems forced and arrangements that are incredibly unSetzer, this was a huge dissapointment.

Being a huge Setzer fan of many years I felt this CD just didn`t have the soul behind the music that one feels in his music. Sure, the guitar solos were right on the money (except in "Zat You Santa Claus?" where he shamelessly plugs in the solo from "Stray Cat Strut") but the arranging of the band and the experimentation that he plays with just don`t feel like Setzer. The song "Angels We Have Heard On High" uses a full choir that does not mix with the drum and guitar riffs and "Gettin` In The Mood (For Christmas)" is simply a track from Setzer`s album "Vavoom" with Christmas lyrics which, in my opinion, sounds extremely cheesy. The only track I found that I enjoyed was "My Favorite Things", the lone mellow track on this CD.

His last CD, Boogie Woogie Christmas, really demonstrated his superior musical abilities (Especially in "The Nutcracker Suite" and) and had the perfect balance of fast, lively, swingin tunes, and slow, mellow, meaningful songs. This CD lacks both the the great demonstration of musical abilities (except his guitar skills, which are flawless) and balance of fast and slow.

So this CD, much like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy`s Christmas CD felt shallow, rushed, and made me believe that *gasp* they were selling out. I know Setzer has bills to pay, but this is not the way to go about it. Don`t waste your time on the sequel; go get Boogie Woogie Christmas and the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, set them on shuffle, and enjoy a really jazzy Christmas.
